"May the long time sun shine upon you, all love surround you and the pure light within you, guide your way on." - Kundalini yoga blessing
As we near the first full moon of 2014 on January 15th, we continue to strengthen our essence and practice of letting go. This is a beautiful time to release through sacred movement and dance, creating self-healing and transformation. Bringing together movement, breath, sound and trance - you enter a sacred space where you can explore your energetic body and connect to the joy of all of creation - the Earth, the trees, the sea, the stars, the sun and moon. By bringing this divine light energy into our chakras we are able to let go of all that no longer serves us, as we begin to 'see' our truth, the truth of our higher self. We are able to access the wisdom that will guide us into wholeness.
Here is a practice Dance with Drums, adapted from Shakta Kaur Khalsa's book Kundalini Yoga.
Begin first by tuning in - sit gently in prayer pose, breathing softly, and recite the Adi Mantra, ONG NAMO GURU DEV NAMO, three times. Mantra is vibration, energy vibrates. This mantra can be read as: "I open myself to the experience beyond my limited self. Let my unlimited spirit and consciousness guide me. I call on the subtle knowledge of my own highest mind to uplift me with what I learn" or "I bow to the Creator, to the Divine Teacher within."
Stand up and begin to dance to drum music. When this set was originally given, this exercise was accompanied by Bangara Rhythms and Punjabi drums. Lift and move your shoulders as you dance. Open the shoulder area. You must dance powerfully to break up the blocks in the body and adjust the spine and neck. Continue for 6 minutes. Then continue to dance and focus on keeping your arms up, moving them as you dance. Move the hands and hips in balance. Keep the hands up to open your shoulders and ribcage. Allow yourself to sweat. Continue for another 6 minutes.
Coming back to a sitting position, feel the energy moving through you and project this out to all loved ones and Mother Earth. Sit in meditation for some time if you wish. End your practice with the words, "May the long time sun shine upon you ... all love surround you ... and the pure light within you ... guide your way on."
Dancing is one of the most simple and fun ways to increase the circulation of energy in the body. It also helps to adjust the structural system and increase flexibility and relaxation. Do not lock your hands overhead - keep them open and raised - and dance to your full capacity.
