Could soul retrieval be beneficial for me?
To answer this question, it is important to first know if you are experiencing any signs of "susto" or soul loss (see below). Susto is any life experience that is traumatic or causes sudden shock or fright. During a moment of susto, it is believed that a piece of your soul, your light essence, flees the body and cannot find its way back. In Peru, Curanderas often view this as a negative air or the energy of fear that enters the body during a moment of vulnerability. Examples of situations that may cause susto are: all forms of abuse (physical, sexual, emotional, mental), death of a loved one, divorce, separation, natural disasters, accidents, surgery and any distress during rites of passage.

If our soul leaves when we experience susto, where does it go?
An energetic piece of the soul simply leaves the subtle energy body of the individual. It is not necessarily important where it has gone, but that we can bring it back so you can be well again, so you can be whole. It is my belief that in order to fulfill our souls particular mission on Earth, all of our light essence must be restored and within us.
It is interesting to note that in many communities in Peru, if a little one experiences susto (for example, falls down and breaks a limb or witnesses the death of an elder) the Curandera will perform a healing on their behalf right away. In our Western culture, the spiritual causes of illness are not as well understood and so we are often going back decades to restore this lost energy.
What is your role, as the healer, in this process?
To hold space for an individual to heal themselves. I connect with Spirit and hold the frequencies of faith and love. For me, it is especially the quality of faith, to be in the presence of someone who believes - in you and in your ability to heal yourself.
When a client is with me, they are not alone. In the presence of another many of our fears dissolve. We can let go, we feel safe. In this space there exists an energy of openness because the individual is seen as they truly are. It is the individual, me, and Spirit.
In my personal experience with susto, I felt "out of my body" and at times I could almost feel my soul calling to me but I couldn't bring it back on my own. My energy was very depleted. I needed a healer, someone who understood this type of illness, to guide me through this process. In this way, I am now also a guide for others.
Can you describe the process?
There are mild forms of susto and more complicated forms. A Curandera does not diagnose according to the symptoms but according to the individual, meaning we take into account the individual, their life experiences, their way of thinking, their fears, their pattern of living and any events that may have prompted the individual to seek healing.
Then depending on the individual, various methods of diagnosing, cleansing, and blessing are used. Some therapies that may be used are healings with raw eggs, candles and a fresh herbal broom. As well as, aromatic and holy waters. As well as plant smoke, herbal infusions and of course, prayer.
How do individuals feel afterwards?
Every human being is unique. We cannot predict how one will feel after the process however I can share some of the experiences my clients report. Some individuals feel sleepy and some are buzzing with energy. Some feel emotional, or quiet. Some feel a shift in physical sensation and perception. Many feel deep peace and relaxation. Most individuals feel a sense of being grounded and "in their body". Individuals often express they feel at home again. In the days and months after soul retrieval most individuals report significant life changes.
